Out and About - My Recent Public Appearances at the Dark History Convention 2015

Wow has it been a really busy past few weeks. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Dark History Con in Illinois again this year. This amazing convention happens each year in Champagne, Illinois and serves as a source of information on history's most frightening happenings. I had a great time meeting other true crime writers, film makers, historians and so much more.


I was so excited to meet Judith Yates. She lives in Nashville, only about an hour from me, and wrote the book When Nashville Bled, a fantastic book about Paul Dennis Reid, a local murderer.

I also met Linda Lee King who wrote Sticks and Stones and Broken Bones: What a Charmed Life I Lead. It tells the harrowing tale of her life growing up and the horrors se witnesses and lived through. 

Can I just say OMFG! I met John Borowski, filmmaker extraordinaire and went fan girl all over him. 

Meeting the incredible artist Jeff Gaither was such a pleasure. He and his wife are truly amazing people and I has such fun talking with them.

I was contacted by a penpal of Darlie Routier's who gave me some of the most recent advances in her case to share with you all. I began writing to Darlie in December of 2005 and she is one woman whom I will never understand how she got behind bars. Really. You know what else? Heather Birden Connecticut

Holly Aeschlimann Holly Aeschlimann, 19 was murdered in Connecticut in April of 2015. This case is amazingly close to that of Rachel Wade. Holly and her killer, Heather Birden, 20, had a longstanding dislike for each other. Heather had stabbed another girl, a juvenile, once before in 2014. She was  held in Niantic Correctional Facility for next three months before the murder as a result of a violation of her probation, and was then released to an in-patient substance abuse rehabilitation facility. Reports state that Birden asked her boyfriend for his knife and then left his house to find Holly stating "I have to end this tonight." Witnesses say Heather arrived and the two began to fight, ending in Holly being stabbed in the head and neck at a crosswalk outside an apartment complex in Torrington, CT.  Her friends rushed her to the hospital where she died.  Heather was hiding under a vehicle a short distance away and feigned confusion when police found her. The Most Beautiful Girls to Ever Kill Their Own Mother

As human beings, we have trouble fathoming the idea of a young girl committing so atrocious a crime as murder. Much less, the murder of her own mother. The concept becomes even more inconceivable when it pertains to a beautiful young woman beautiful young woman with a loving family and the world at her fingertips. These girls aren't all women in prison now. Some have been released and disappeared into the mainstream. Scary, huh?  Nakisha Waddell     At age 14, Nakisha Waddell stabbed her mother, Vaughne Thomas, 43 times in their Virginia home. In court, she said she was tired of the years of fighting and just exploded. Her 15-year-old friend, Annie Belcher, helped her dig a grave in the backyard. The pair poured alcohol and nail polish remover on the dead woman and tried to ignite her to no avail.  They eventually mixed a crude concrete mixture and poured it on top of her and finished by covering her with sticks, leaves, and yard debris.
